Community-Owned Vermont Store Seeks General Manager
Position: General Manager
Reports to: Shrewsbury Cooperative Board of Directors
Hours: 40 hours/week
Salary: $50,000 annually, plus performance-based incentives

Overview & Vision
The Shrewsbury Cooperative at Pierce's Store (SCPS) is a community-supported and operated enterprise. Pierce's Store is a historic gathering place for sharing community information, knowledge, food, work, and friendship. As a store, we provide an affordable mix of conventional, organic, and locally produced groceries, along with products from local Vermont artisans. As a community hub, we bring our neighbors together and help maintain the traditions and connections that make Shrewsbury a special place.
The General Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation and performance of Pierce's Store. This is a hands-on management position requiring active participation in store operations and leadership of employees and volunteers.
The General Manager reports to the Board of Directors and operates within Board-established policies, budget, and strategic direction. The Board provides guidance, support, and necessary resources, while the General Manager has the authority and responsibility to make day-to-day operational and personnel decisions within that framework.

  • Manage purchasing, inventory, pricing, and merchandising to meet sales and margin goals while minimizing shrink and out-of-stock products.
  • Maintain a mix of conventional, organic, local, and specialty products consistent with customer demand, the Store's mission, and financial objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers and seek opportunities to improve product selection, pricing, purchasing terms, and availability.
Staff & Volunteer Management
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers within the approved labor budget and Board policies.
  • Establish clear expectations, delegate effectively, develop employees, and foster a positive and productive workplace.

  • Manage day-to-day store operations independently within the policies, budget, and strategic direction established by the Board.
  • Attend Board meetings and work collaboratively with the Board on planning, budgeting, and strategic priorities.
Required Qualifications
